Story of Callisto
Callisto’s Trials and Tribulations

Callisto has been through a lot during her life. As a small child, she watched her family burn when Xena and her army raided her town. This marked the beginning of her treacherous adult life. She pursued Xena for many years with only one thing on her mind, revenge. She wanted to kill Xena as pay back for killing her family. After shooting Xena with a poison arrow, she revived Xena’s reputation as a killer of women and children. Xena went after her impersonator and knew she had to stop her reign of terror. After a long chase, Xena finally captured Callisto and brought her back to be tried for her crimes. Callisto managed to escape the jail cell in which she was imprisoned and captured Gabrielle to use as bait for the Warrior Princess. When Xena came to rescue Gabrielle she found a maze of ladders in which Callisto would take her on in combat. Xena’s mind was on rescuing Gabrielle and Callisto’s mind was on killing Xena. Callisto made one wrong move and it was over for her. She was imprisoned again.
Callisto managed to escape from prison and went after Xena again. She made herself known by sending a message to Xena through Joxer. Xena was determined to get Callisto and had several chances to get her but instead defended poor farmers and townspeople from Callisto’s wrath. Gabrielle married her friend Perdicus only to have him be killed by Callisto not long after the wedding. This sparked intense hatred in Gabrielle and she was determined to kill Callisto. When Gabrielle went after Callisto but was captured and used as bait again. Xena came after her and was trapped but got freed. She fought Callisto for a short while until Callisto went outside and fled in a chariot. Xena chased her and attacked her on the chariot. The chariot crashed and threw them into quicksand. Xena freed herself but let Callisto die.
The guilt of killing Callisto plagued Xena so much that Callisto was able to get to her through her dreams. With the help of Ares, God of War, she tricked Xena into letting her guilt overcome her, then escaped from the underworld in Xena’s body. Callisto used this to her advantage and made an attempt to burn everyone from Xena’s village Amphipolis. Xena foiled her plan after being freed from the underworld by Hades, trapped in Callisto’s body. Xena only had one day to get to Callisto and by the time she did it was too late. She did however put Callisto to sleep with a potion and she took her place in Tartarus yet again, only she was still in Xena’s body. Xena came back to life in Callisto’s body and after doing a favor for Ares, she got her real body back.

Callisto was stuck in Tartarus only to be resurrected by Hera to kill Hercules who leads her to the Labyrinth of the Gods were she becomes immortal and trapped inside. Then Xena needs her help to defeat Velasca so she releases her tempting Callisto with the fact that if she helps she has a chance for the fruit of the gods, ambrosia. While fighting Velasca she gets a hold of the ambrosia and is now a god. But Xena traps her in a lava pit with Velasca, only to return by way of Gabrielle’s daughter of darkness Hope. Callisto kills Xena’s son Solen and thus gets her revenge, but says to Xena she gets no peace out of the death of Solen and to leave her alone. This is as far as sympathy goes with Callisto and Xena is not pleased so she traps her in a cave. Then Hope, thought to be dead, takes a angered Callisto out again this time to kill Hercules. Unhappy with the idea but tempted with the idea that she can go back in time and save her family, she agrees, only this time gets trapped in a world between worlds kind of vortex.
Callisto, being a god, frees herself from the vortex and searches for Hope. What she finds is a cocoon that holds a growing Hope inside. She agrees to help Hope if she does her a favor in return, kill her. She wants oblivion, to die, no Tartarus, no nothing. She hopes that the oblivion she desires will offer her peace. After Hope grows into a look-a-like for Gabrielle, she tells Callisto that when Dahok rules the world, she will then get death. Callisto, obviously disappointed by that, offers Xena her help in return that she kill her. She would rather have Xena do it anyway, as sort of a closure. She also knows that Xena knows where the Hinds Blood Dagger is, which she needs in order to die. When the big battle in the end between Dahok and Xena, Gabrielle ends up sacrificing herself to save Hope. Callisto’s whole attitude changes during that very moment and she doesn’t want to die anymore. Suddenly, Xena turns on her and plunges the Hinds Blood Dagger straight into her stomach. Callisto in pure horror and shock starts to fall to the floor. While falling she reaches out and slowly caresses Xena’s cheek. She takes a final breath and the legend Callisto, Warrior Queen fell to the ground surrounded by the peace she was searching for her whole life.
